Basic Classification Of Ferrosilicon

Ferrosilicon is divided into four categories according to the smelting method: high silicon ferrosilicon, ordinary ferrosilicon, low aluminum ferrosilicon and high purity ferrosilicon. High-purity ferrosilicon refers to ferrosilicon with low impurity element content produced by refining outside the furnace.
High silicon ferrosilicon: ferrosilicon with a silicon content of more than 87%.
Ordinary ferrosilicon: the most widely used 72# ferrosilicon, 75# ferrosilicon, 65# ferrosilicon, ferrosilicon that generally does not have too many requirements for other impurity content in the alloy.

Low aluminum ferrosilicon: In ferrosilicon alloy, an alloy made by adding a certain amount of aluminum element is also called silicon-aluminum ferrosilicon alloy, and the aluminum content needs to be marked.
High-purity ferrosilicon: A ferrosilicon alloy with Si and Fe as effective elements and very low content of other impurities. It has very high requirements.

Low Titanium (High Purity) Ferrosilicon Powdering Problem

Ferrosilicon is prone to powdering under certain conditions during storage and transportation. This is caused by the volume expansion caused by the phase change of FeSi and FeSi2, which contain about 34% silicon and 50 to 60% silicon. Phosphorus, sulfur, calcium, aluminum in impurities and humid atmosphere will cause ferrosilicon to pulverize. Ferrosilicon ingots can also easily pulverize due to segregation when they are slowly cooled. When ferrosilicon is pulverized, gases such as hydrogen, phosphine and arsine are released, which can cause explosions. The latter two gases are toxic, so the storage and transportation of ferrosilicon must be well ventilated to prevent moisture.

High Carbon Ferro Silicon Uses

1.Used as inoculant and spheroidizing agent in the cast iron industry. Cast iron is an important metal material in modern industry. It is cheaper than steel, easy to melt and smelt, has excellent casting properties and is much better than steel in earthquake resistance. In particular, the mechanical properties of ductile iron reach or are close to those of steel. Adding a certain amount of ferrosilicon to cast iron can prevent the formation of carbides in the iron and promote the precipitation and spheroidization of graphite. Therefore, ferrosilicon is an important inoculant (and spheroidizing agent) in the production of ductile iron.
2.Used as reducing agent in ferroalloy production. Not only is the chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen very high, but the carbon content of high-silicon ferrosilicon is very low. Therefore, high-silicon ferrosilicon is a commonly used reducing agent in the ferroalloy industry when producing low-carbon ferroalloys.
