Manufacture And Use

(1) Used as a deoxidizer and alloy agent in the steelmaking industry. To obtain steel with a qualified chemical composition and ensure the quality of steel, deoxidation must be carried out during the steelmaking stage. The chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen is very large, so ferrosilicon is a strong deoxidizer in steelmaking and is used for precipitation deoxidation and diffusion deoxidation. Adding a certain amount of silicon to steel can significantly improve the strength, hardness, and elasticity of the steel. Ferrosilicon is also used as an alloying agent when containing SiO. 40-2.8%) and silicon steel for transformers (containing 2.81-4.8% silicon).

(2) Used as an inoculant and spheroidizing agent in the cast iron industry. Cast iron is an important metal material in modern industry. It is cheaper than steel, easy to melt and smelt has excellent casting properties, and has much better impact resistance than steel. In particular, ductile iron has mechanical properties that are equal to or close to those of steel. Adding a certain amount of ferrosilicon to cast iron can prevent the formation of carbides in the iron and promote the precipitation and spheroidization of graphite. Therefore, in ductile iron, ferrosilicon is an important inoculant (helping to precipitate graphite) and spheroidizing agent.

(3) Used as a reducing agent in iron alloys. Not only is the chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen high, but high-silicon ferrosilicon has a very low carbon content. Therefore, high-silicon ferrosilicon (or silicon alloy) is a commonly used low-carbon ferroalloy-reducing agent in the ferroalloy industry.

(4) Ferrosilicon is often used in the high-temperature smelting process of magnesium metal in the Pidgeon process of magnesium smelting. To replace magnesium in CaO·MgO, approximately 1.2 tons of ferrosilicon are consumed for every ton of magnesium metal produced. Magnesium metal plays an important role.

(5) Other uses. Ground or atomized ferrosilicon powder can be used as a suspended phase in the mineral processing industry. It can be used as a coating for welding rods in the welding rod manufacturing industry. High-silicon ferrosilicon is used in the chemical industry to make products such as silicones.

Among these uses, the steelmaking industry, foundry industry, and ferroalloy industry are large users of ferrosilicon. Together they consume about 90% of the ferrosilicon. Among various grades of ferrosilicon, 75% ferrosilicon is currently widely used. In the steelmaking industry, approximately 3-5kg of 75% ferrosilicon is consumed per 1 ton of steel.

Applications

Since silicon and oxygen are very easy to combine into silica, ferrosilicon is usually used as a deoxidizer during steelmaking. Since silica releases a large amount of heat when it is generated, it greatly contributes to increasing the temperature of molten steel while deoxidizing. benefit.

At the same time, ferrosilicon can also be used as an alloying element additive and is widely used in low-alloy structural steel, spring steel, bearing steel, heat-resistant steel, and electrical silicon steel. Ferrosilicon is generally used as a reducing agent in ferroalloy production and chemical industry.

The steelmaking industry, foundry industry, and ferroalloy industry are the largest users of ferrosilicon, and together they consume more than 90% of ferrosilicon. Among various brands of ferrosilicon, the most widely used is 75% ferrosilicon.
