Choosing a ferrosilicon supplier is not simply a matter of comparing FeSi75 or FeSi72 prices. For steelmakers and ferroalloy buyers, the more important questions are whether the supplied chemistry matches the specification, whether particle size remains consistent between batches, and whether the supplier can provide reliable quality documentation and delivery.

This guide explains what industrial buyers should check before selecting a ferrosilicon supplier.

A reliable ferrosilicon supplier should be evaluated on grade consistency, impurity control, particle-size distribution, batch documentation and delivery capability, not price per ton alone.

Before requesting a quotation, define the FeSi grade, required Si content, impurity limits, particle size, quantity and destination. If your production has tighter requirements, provide a previous specification or COA for comparison.

Ferrosilicon grades are primarily differentiated by silicon content.

Common metallurgical grades include FeSi75, FeSi72, FeSi65 and other silicon ranges for specific applications.

A higher silicon percentage does not automatically make one grade more suitable than another. The correct grade depends on how much silicon must be introduced and what other elements the steelmaking process can tolerate.

When comparing suppliers, first make sure both quotations refer to the same grade specification.

The purchase specification should define the impurity limits that actually matter to the process instead of relying only on the FeSi grade name.

• variable silicon recovery,
• different dissolution behavior,
• changes in fines content,
• and more production adjustment time.

For repeat purchases, compare several batch COAs instead of evaluating only one sample.

Particle size is another important purchasing parameter.

The required size depends on how ferro silicon is charged, handled and added to molten steel.

When sending an inquiry, specify:

• minimum particle size,
• maximum particle size,
• acceptable fines,
• acceptable oversize,
• and whether powder or crushed material is required.

There is no universal best ferrosilicon particle size. It should be selected according to the actual feeding and steelmaking process.

A useful batch Certificate of Analysis should identify the material supplied and report the chemistry agreed in the purchase specification.

Depending on the grade, buyers may request:

• Si
• Al
• Ca
• C
• P
• S
• other controlled elements
• batch number

A general product brochure shows what a supplier can offer. A batch COA shows what was actually produced.

Buying directly from a manufacturer can make it easier to understand production capability, specification control and available particle sizes.

However, this does not mean every trader is unsuitable.

A trader or exporter can still provide qualified material if they can clearly confirm:

• actual manufacturing source,
• product specification,
• batch COA,
• origin,
• inspection arrangement,
• and delivery responsibility.

The real question is not simply whether the seller is a manufacturer, but whether the supplied material consistently meets the required specification.

A cheaper quotation may not remain cheaper if it introduces higher fines, wider chemistry variation or additional production adjustments.
